Safety

A good safety attitude, active identification of hazards and effective mitigation of the identified risks are cornerstones to a comprehensive safety culture.

One of our company’s most valuable assets is the absolutely equal treatment of our personnel, no matter what nationality or cultural background. We are one.

Baltic Scandinavian Shipping and its entire fleet adhere to the rigorous standards set by the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Safety Management (ISM) Code. This code serves as a global benchmark to ensure that ships are operated and managed safely, with a strong focus on pollution prevention.

We are proud to have received the Document of Compliance (DoC) from DNV, authorized by the Finnish government, which covers all vessels owned and operated by Baltic Scandinavian Shipping.

Each vessel in the fleet is also equipped with a Safety Management Certificate (SMC). To uphold these credentials, the DoC is subject to annual review, while the SMC is reevaluated every two and a half years. Together, these documents confirm our strict adherence to the ISM Code, as outlined in Chapter IX of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974.

Furthering our commitment to safety, every ship has an occupational safety and health committee that represents the entire crew. This committee meets once per Master’s shift to review and implement safety protocols aboard, ensuring the highest standards of safety for our crew and operations.

Towards zero accidents

Workplace safety is closely monitored at the group level, with two key metrics: the Total Reported Incident Rate (TRIR) and the Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate (LTIFR). TRIR covers all reported incidents, while LTIFR focuses only on accidents that result in absence from work. A strong safety culture is built on a positive safety attitude, proactive hazard identification, and effective risk mitigation. Seafarers are encouraged to report potential safety hazards and are also motivated to submit proposals to enhance onboard safety. Baltic Scandinavian Shipping enforces a strict alcohol and drug policy through random testing and targeted testing in cases of suspected breaches. To maintain a safe working environment, the company conducts unannounced substance control tests to monitor any potential substance abuse among employees.
