Baltic Scandinavian

Services

Our ice-strengthened vessels are designed to operate in the demanding conditions of the Baltic Sea and Arctic areas.

Sustainable shipping solutions

Our eco-smart LNG-powered 25,000 dwt vessels Viikki and Haaga are the demonstration of how we are able to achieve significant emissions reductions per cargo ton meeting already today IMO’s -50% reduction target for 2050. The use of LNG combined with numerous other energy-saving measures results in over 50% less CO2 emissions compared to previous vessel generation.

Our whole fleet is able to use Neste’s co-processed marine fuel, which will reduce lifecycle GHG emissions by up to 80%. In addition to biodiesel, Viikki and Haaga are able to use liquefied biogas (LBG) as well.

We also offer our customers the possibility to introduce the Virtual Arrival concept, which strives to optimise the vessel’s speed during the passage and minimise the waiting time at the anchorage.

Geared fleet

All of Baltic Scandinavian’s vessels are equipped with three to four cargo cranes, allowing them to operate independently of the loading and unloading services offered at ports. Each vessel is fitted with grabs, and most are equipped with bobcats for trimming. These features make port visits faster and operations more efficient. Additionally, Baltic Scandinavian’s vessels are designed to work alongside other ships, even in challenging conditions, enabling loading and unloading at sea.

Transshipments at sea

Baltic Scandinavian has been performing ship-to-ship operations since 1981. Our vessels, ranging from 13,000 to 25,000 dwt, are equipped with side-mounted cranes and designed to work alongside other ships, even in challenging conditions. They all feature fenders and sufficiently tall and long-armed cranes to ensure effective and safe operations. Additionally, we operate four 13,500 dwt barges that can serve as lightering vessels when the ocean carrier is equipped with cranes. Many of the largest export ports in the Baltic Sea have draft limitations that prevent large ocean carriers from taking full cargo loads. By utilizing our efficient shuttle vessels, you can maximize intake and benefit from economies of scale. To further enhance capacity, we also offer topping services after the Danish Straits in Skaw, where there are no draft limits for the ocean carrier.

Project cargoes

With the support of our own supercargo personnel, our vessels are perfectly suited for project shipments. Our Handysize and Supramax vessels are all equipped with cranes, allowing for independent cargo handling regardless of the available port facilities. Additionally, our vessels are capable of taking cargo on deck, providing even more flexibility for your shipping needs.

Arctic shipments

Beyond the Baltic Sea, our ice-class vessels are perfectly suited for extreme northern regions, including the eastern coast of the United States and Canada. While Arctic sea routes are typically open only from July to October, our ice-strengthened vessels are capable of navigating these challenging waters year-round. In recent years, our vessels have successfully operated in the Canadian Arctic. During the summer season of 2021, *Kumpula* completed two round trips to Asia via the Northeast Passage, demonstrating the versatility and reliability of our fleet. Additionally, *Pasila* has been engaged in transporting project cargoes to the LNG terminal project in the Yamal Peninsula, showcasing our capability in Arctic logistics. You can also follow *Haaga’s* first commercial voyage through the Northeast Passage, highlighting our commitment to exploring new shipping routes and meeting the demands of our customers in the most challenging environments.

Our tanks range in size from 40 to 60 feet high, and 150 to 270 feet in diameter, holding anywhere from 57,000 to 575,000 barrels of petroleum products. The size of the tank is determined by the design requirements of pipeline and refinery customers. • Floating roofs on storage tanks are made with primary and secondary seals to contain vapors. These seals are located near the surface of the oil and reduce emissions as well as risk of ignition. • State-of-the-art systems ranging from radar that tracks tank levels to mixers are used to maintain product integrity during breakout storage. • We operates 32 petroleum storage terminals with a total of 497 tanks in Houston, Qingdao, Jurong, Fujairah and in Rotterdam ports respectively. The terminals are staffed by trained employees who live in nearby communities. • Our Tank Farm Facilities and terminals are strictly regulated and must comply with comprehensive Transportation requirements that govern everything from design, maintenance, and size of tanks; to safety measures including containment; to regulations for air quality and other environment permitting. All Baltic Scandinavian Tank Terminal Tank Farm above-ground storage tanks are constructed using quality steel plate engineered to exacting federal codes and national standards for the size, environment and product to be stored. Among other integrity testing, new tanks are filled with water and monitored for potential leaks during hydrostatic testing prior to being placed into service. In addition, cathodic protection provides corrosion control as normal operations are engaged. Tanks are also grounded to minimize static electricity build up during filling and refilling, and to redirect lightning strikes, should any occur. All of our facilities are routinely monitored, inspected and maintained. Trained terminal personnel complete a visual inspection of every tank at least monthly. Additional annual inspections are also performed. In recent years, our vessels have successfully operated in the Canadian Arctic.
